B2B SEO Scorecard

Are you losing valuable leads due to poor search engine optimization? Take this short quiz to find out.

1. Pull up your company’s Website and look at the top of your Web browser (the blue bar at the top of the page). Does it say, “Welcome to Widget Company”? Do other pages on your site read, “Products Page” or “Services”?

If you answered yes, you most likely have poorly written Title tags. Title tags, which are also the clickable links in the search result listings, are one of the most important aspects of search engine optimization. To ignore Title tags means you’re basically sending inquires to your competitors’ Websites.

2. Pick three to five of your search terms and plug them into Google, Yahoo and Bing. Are you in the top 10 listings?

If you answered “no,” you may not be listed due to poorly written page titles, using the “wrong” keywords, or other problems.

3. When you look at your source code, can you read your site’s copy? (To view your source code, go to your browser’s menu and hit “View” and then “Source.” This will open a new window and you’ll be able to see your site’s HTML code.)

If you can’t see text — the sales/marketing copy from your page — in your source code, neither can search engine spiders. Spiders need to “crawl” text in order to determine what your site is about.

4. Does your site use frames, Flash or “dynamic” navigation? Is your copy embedded in graphics (i.e. jpgs, gifs)?

While they do index “dynamic” and Flash sites, search engines still sometimes have a hard time displaying the content. If you embed copy within graphic files, the search engine spiders can’t read it. (Graphic designers often design headlines and sub-heads as graphic files — a huge no-no if you’ve optimized your page headlines with important keywords!)

5. Type your company’s name into Google, Yahoo or Bing. How many listings do you have that come from other sites linking to you?

Inbound links from other sites are critically important in determining your site’s “relevance” (and hence, where you come up in the listings for a given search term). The more quality inbound links you have, the better your position.
