"Dianna, Do I Really Need to Start a Blog?"
That’s a question I’m frequently asked these days. In fact, I just got off the phone with one of my clients, Rees Whitaker of Inca Gold Products.
Rees sells toilet chemicals to companies like Greyhound Bus Lines.
He’s also been reading marketing books by gurus such as Seth Godin.
We were talking about his marketing and he said, “Dianna, let’s be serious here. I have nothing to say about toilet chemicals. I really do not want to start a blog.”
My response?
“Rees, you don’t need to.” (However, he could do a really great postcard campaign or email offers — which we did talk about.)
If you’re a small company and wondering if you should start a blog, then you should definitely sign up to attend my next teleclass, “Is a Blog Right For You? A B2B Small Business Workshop.”
The fabulous blogging expert and author Ted Demopoulos is my special guest — and in addition to giving you reasons why you should not start a blog, he’ll also give you lots of great advice about starting a blog and how to use it to generate interest — and yes, even revenue — for your business.

Yes, people really do need to start blogging — it’s critical. I recently got our CEO blogging — it’s been fantastic. Great to get his insights on news in our industry, and it really is a great marketing tool. I would say that blogging is the best marketing tool for niche b2b online markets.

Pete, Do you think *every* business needs a blog? I don’t.

I agree it doesn’t always work. But I think there are many people who are too reluctant, and who could gain from beginning a blog (especially with the right keyword/marketing knowledge).
Mike McLaughlin recently posted an entry about this topic as well — http://guerrillaconsulting.typepad.com/guerrilla_marketing_for_c/2005/08/should_consulta.html

But isn’t there more to blogging than SEO? I don’t think ranking well for keywords is the best reason to start a blog.

I agree it shouldn’t be the only reason to create a blog, I do think blog owners should take the search engine marketing advantages into consideration when making the decision whether or not to blog.

[...] Diana Huff recently wrote on whether or not a small business should start a blog. (She is also offering a teleclass on the subject on March 11.) Her conclusion is that not every company needs a blog. I agree, but in high tech there are three good reasons to create a blog – as long as you can commit to creating content (more on that below). blogging is definately a great tool for transpancy and understanding. Also a platform for some back and forth is you choose. It can provide clarity and steer thinking to create a better environment for team work.
