Computer is part of life 24/7
Had a great “unplugged” vacation. My son (who is nine) and I played “tourist” in the Boston area. We visited the Museum of Science, did the Duck tour, and spent too much money eating lunch out and school shopping. We had a blast.
Although I kept my computer off for the entire nine days, I was surprised at how much I’ve come to rely on the Internet for so many things. I secretly logged on to my husband’s computer to find the following:
MBTA train schedules
Mapquest for directions to various events
Web sites for hours and directions for local venues
And, I was surprised at how “disoriented” I felt for the first few days. I realized, with some dismay, that I piddle away a great amount of time on the computer – consequently, I know more about people I’ve “met” online than I do my own neighbors. Very scary.
At any rate, I’m back at work and feeling re-energized. My time away from work and all things Internet made me see I need to build some new hobbies. I have plans to attend local theater productions and perhaps even take piano lessons.
What do you think? Do you find you spend too much time online? If so, what do you do to find “balance”?
